The square neck tank in a plain knit, cut to the same block and the same flat neckline as its patterned counterpart. It is the pause between two patterns.
The plain vest is one of the most durable garments in the reference material and one of the least remarked upon — worn under everything, in every photograph, across every decade the archive covers, and never the subject of the picture. Archive II takes that position seriously. This is a foundation garment in the structural sense: the piece the rest of the wardrobe is built against, cut with the same precision as the pieces that will be looked at more. The knit is lighter in hand than its appearance suggests, close through the ribcage, finished at the neck and armhole with a clean edge rather than a rib so the line stays uninterrupted under tailoring.
