Short Open Back Dress In Linear Print

A floral worked in outline only — stems, petals and leaves rendered as a continuous drawn line on an oyster silk ground, the flowers left open where a print would ordinarily fill them. Held flat the pattern is barely there; in movement the line catches and disappears against the sheen of the cloth. It is the difference between a flower described and a flower stated.
The back is scooped low and left entirely open, the dress held at the shoulders by two panels of the same silk that fall loose down the back rather than being seamed into it. That is the logic of a length of cloth worn over the shoulder rather than a garment cut to the body — the panel is not a sleeve or a strap but simply cloth, allowed to hang. The front is gathered along one side seam in a vertical run of ruching that draws the silk across the hip, and the hem is finished in a soft tiered flounce that moves independently of the body underneath.
