Piped Mandarin Collar Shift Dress

Piping runs the mandarin collar, the front opening and the principal seams. It is the seam made visible — the line of assembly turned into the design, worked by someone who wanted the construction seen rather than concealed. Every piped edge on this dress marks where two pieces of cloth were joined.
That instinct sits close to the centre of Archive II. Strip-woven cloth counts its joins; a painted gameboard shows the brush; a garment repaired for preservation rather than replacement carries the record of its own maintenance on its surface. Piping is the tailored equivalent, and it is slow work — each length cut on the bias, filled, and set into the seam before closing. The mandarin collar stands without a fold, which holds the neckline upright and keeps the shoulder square, and the shift falls straight from the shoulder with no waist seam, so the body reads as a single panel of cloth from collar to hem and the piping is the only line drawn across it.
