Belted Mini Dress

Once sold, the edition is closed.

The same silhouette as its patterned counterpart, held in a single unbroken ground. Where the jacquard dress makes its argument on the surface, this one makes it in construction — the placement of the seams, the density of the knit, the line the belt draws across the waist. It is the ground against which the rest of Archive II is read.

A collection built on pattern requires a plain piece or the pattern stops being legible. This is a structural rather than a commercial position: in strip-woven cloth the undyed band is what allows the dyed band to be seen, and in studio portraiture the flat backdrop is what allows the sitter's dress to register at all. The piece is cut to the same block as the jacquard dress, so the two exist as one decision made twice. It will be worn most often and photographed least, which is the correct relationship to have with a garment intended to last.
