Wool Bib Shirt

The bib is worked as a separate panel set into the front of the shirt across the chest. It arrives from formal and uniform dress, where a stiffened front marked a garment as decided before the day began — evening dress, ceremonial dress, the school shirt photographed in a studio against a drawn curtain.

The substitution is the argument. A bib front is conventionally cotton marcella, chosen because it holds rigidity and reads as ceremony; rendering it in wool moves the whole garment out of evening and into daylight, and out of occasion and into use. The panel is set into the front rather than laid over it, so the transition reads as a seam rather than an applied edge, and the shirt keeps a single continuous surface. Wool gives weight at the shoulder and a quiet drape through the sleeve. It does not require a jacket over it to look finished, which is the practical consequence of putting formality into the cloth rather than into the styling.
