The stripe is woven into the silk rather than printed onto it, so it carries weight, catches light differently along its length, and changes across the course of a day. The plaid stripe clash governs the surface: stripes set against stripes to produce optical presence rather than decoration, a principle drawn from the historical strip-woven textiles of West Africa where narrow widths are joined edge to edge and the joins are counted rather than concealed.
That construction is the reason the stripe exists at all. A strip loom produces a band, and cloth is made by assembling bands — meaning the pattern is a record of the assembly, and the irregularity where two strips meet is not a fault but the evidence of how the thing was made. The jacquard here is engineered to hold that rhythm across the body. The revere collar is cut and pressed to sit open and stay open without a stand fighting it, leaving the neckline exposed and the stripe uninterrupted across the chest.
