KNITTED SCALLOPED EDGE JACQUARD CARDIGAN

Once sold, the edition is closed.

The scallop is lifted from the border of a painted gameboard, where a row of half circles frames the grid and stops the pattern running off the edge of the wood. It is a functional device — a boundary, drawn by hand, to contain a field that would otherwise have no end — which became a decorative one through repetition. The cardigan inherits it as both.

Knitting a scalloped edge requires the edge to be shaped on the machine rather than cut and finished afterwards, which is slow and is the reason the detail appears rarely at this scale. It runs the full front placket and both cuffs, so the border does what borders do: it frames the floral jacquard and tells the eye where the piece stops. The floral itself sits in the same register as the camisole, and the two were developed to be worn together — one contained by an edge, one deliberately without one.
