The grid is engineered to run continuously across the front, which means the pattern was placed before the piece was cut rather than assigned to it afterwards. There is no external pocket, because a pocket would break the field and the field is the piece.
The reference is discipline rather than leisure. The tennis photographs in Archive II's reference material show women in white on a hard court in heat, clothes cut for movement and worn with the composure of people who know they are being photographed — sport as a register of dress rather than of exertion. The short reads the same way here: cut high on the waist with a clean band and a short inseam, held rather than gripped, patterned to run with the square neck tank so the two can be worn as a set or separated without either losing its argument.
